The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways (MoAW), in collaboration with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF), today commissioned four new X-Ray machines at Nadi International Airport, marking a major advancement in Fiji’s border protection capabilities.
Officiating at the commissioning, the Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Hon. Tomasi Tunabuna, said the investment reflects the Fiji Government’s commitment to safeguarding Fiji from biosecurity risks, illegal trade, and other evolving border threats.
“These new X-Ray machines represent a significant step toward strengthening our ability to detect and prevent harmful pests, diseases, and prohibited items from entering Fiji. They will also support wider national security efforts by enhancing our ability to identify risks linked to drug trafficking and illegal trade,” said Hon. Tunabuna.
The Minister highlighted that the machines provide faster, more accurate, and non-intrusive screening, improving both detection efficiency and passenger clearance at Nadi and Nausori International Airports.
“With increased travel and trade, Fiji faces heightened exposure to border risks. These advanced tools ensure we remain vigilant and prepared, protecting our ecosystems, industries, and communities,” he added.
BAF Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Surend Pratap, acknowledged the importance of collaborative border security efforts across agencies including FRCS, Fiji Airports, Fiji Police Force, and other enforcement partners.
“The new X-Ray machines significantly enhance BAF’s operational capacity. They allow us to detect biosecurity risk items more reliably and support frontline officers in maintaining a safe and efficient border system,” Mr. Surend Pratap said.
The four machines will be deployed across Nadi and Nausori International Airports, supporting baggage screening and early detection of potential biosecurity threats.
The Ministry and BAF reaffirm their commitment to protecting Fiji’s borders, ensuring safe trade, and safeguarding the nation’s agricultural and environmental integrity.
